About

Hello there — I’m Walter Roland, and I’m the voice behind mysparkwireless.com. You’ll usually find me perched at my standing-desk in my home office here in Denver, Colorado, sipping a cup of single-origin coffee, headphones on, and testing whatever electronics, wireless gear or home-tech gadget just showed up at the door.

After years working deep in the telecom trenches, I decided that starting in early 2025 I wanted to channel all that hands-on experience into something a little more personal and more useful for people just like you: honest, real-world product reviews and buying advice.

My Journey

I studied Electrical and Computer Engineering at Colorado State University, graduating in 2011. Straight out of school I joined a regional communications firm as a network engineer, and later helped lead operations for a mid-sized mobile carrier’s WiFi and small-cell deployment team. I spent a good chunk of my career evaluating and installing wireless link gear, access points, routers, mesh systems and the kind of “infrastructure stuff” that most folks will never see. That experience taught me two things: (1) technology is only useful when it fits life, not the other way around, and (2) the best gear for you is the one you’ll actually use — not necessarily the most hyped.

Why This Blog

My domain name, mysparkwireless.com, reflects that older-world background in telecom and wireless connectivity. But starting in 2025 I pivoted the site’s focus toward something broader: consumer-friendly product reviews. I realized that the same smack-in-the-trench testing I used for big-gear infrastructure could help everyday buyers make smarter choices with the gadgets they bring into their homes. When I pick a product to review — whether it’s a bluetooth speaker, a drone, a smart doorbell or a compact portable charger — I use it in my day-to-day: in my apartment, in my car, while traveling, and yes — sometimes even on the hiking trail. Then I report what worked, what didn’t, and whether it really justifies its price.

What You’ll Find Here

On this blog you’ll find full breakdowns of product performance, durability over time, usability in “real life” scenarios, and sometimes even how it interacts with the gear you already own. I don’t want to merely repeat specs or copy manufacturer press-release speak — I want you to know: if you plug it in, will it live up to your expectations? Is the setup painless? Does the product’s software updates keep pace? Does it hold up a month later? I also offer comparisons across price tiers and use-cases, so you can decide whether something premium is worth it or a more budget option hits the sweet spot.

My Promise to You

Every review is done with integrity. I declare when affiliate links are involved — yes, I may earn a commission if you click and buy, but that will never influence whether I recommend a product (or not). My goal is to build trust, so if I say “go for it” you’ll know I mean it — and if I say “better skip this,” you’ll know why. I believe in transparency, clear pros and cons, and sharing what a product really feels like after real-life use.

When I’m Not Reviewing Gear

Outside of gadget-testing I love to hit Colorado’s trails — trail running, backpacking and star-watching under wide open skies. I often carry a stabilised camera rig and the latest portable battery pack, just to see how they hold up when dust, wind and altitude get involved. I also spend time mentoring young engineers, because I believe sharing knowledge helps everyone get smarter about the tech we all rely on.

Thanks for stopping by mysparkwireless.com. I hope the reviews help you find gear that sparks joy, works reliably, and fits your life — not just the hype. If you ever have a tech question or want me to test something in particular, drop me a line. Welcome to the blog — glad you’re here.
